It’s been an up and down ski season this year and I’m not just talking about altitude. The weather leading up to this weekend was warm and wet, followed by cold nights, so skiing was predictably icy. It was obvious on our first run that Bromont, like all the other hills in our region of North America, is pumping out as much snow as they can, but mother nature is not making it easy.

Still, we had planned another day of family skiing with our niece and nephews (ages 8 and twin 7 year olds) so the mild temperatures and sunshine are the perfect recipe for big (sometimes toothless) smiles!

This was the biggest mountain the kids had been on (Rigaud and Bruno previously) so we started the day at Mont Soleil. This proved to be a great place for them to build their confidence on Victoriaville and Daveluyville. The mountain appeared extremely busy but on Mont Soleil we never waited longer than 5 minutes in the lift line.

It’s great to experience so many first times at the ski hill with the kids. Our niece dropped a ski pole from the chair lift and at first, she was devastated! But after some reassurance from her mom and auntie, she patiently waited the rest of the chair ride to the top and skillfully mono-poled her way back down. She was very happy to be reunited with her lost pole and gave it a big hug! I remember my first ski pole drop… Good times.

After a bite to eat we took the kids up on the big chair to Versant du Village. Unfortunately, Bromont has had mechanical issues with the high speed quad (#4) so they are only operating the slow quad beside it (#3) on this day. We were told it’s been closed all week, and the line ups were a good 15-30 minute wait.

So of course I had to show the kids how to make time pass quicker while waiting for the chair lift. We practiced poking each other with our ski poles, flicking snow up in the air with our ski tips, and my personal favorite – releasing your neighbour’s binding when they aren’t looking.

We took the kids down Brome, which is a great long green run along the outer edge of Versant du Village. This is a great place to get a lot of turns in and it was very popular. Bromont has made lots of snow and there was decent coverage over the icy sections.

Skiing is such a great sport. Even when the snow is less than optimal, you can spend a full day outside in the winter and make memories to last a lifetime.
